Five years after Suzhou Museum West opened its doors, the area around Lion Hill has developed into a major cultural destination in Suzhou New District, bringing museums, performing arts, science education and public space together in a former industrial area.

Opened on Sept. 29, 2021, Suzhou Museum West was designed by German architecture firm gmp as a cluster of 10 cube-like structures. Since its opening, the museum has received more than 7 million visits and has become an important venue for exhibitions and educational programs.

One of its current highlights is Prosperous Suzhou, a Qing Dynasty handscroll by Suzhou-born court painter Xu Yang. More than 12 meters long, the work offers a panoramic view of the city during the Qianlong era, depicting streets, shops, waterways and everyday life in remarkable detail. Returning to Suzhou after 20 years, the painting is on display through Oct. 11.

The museum’s growth has unfolded alongside a wider transformation of Shishan Cultural Square. Lion Hill and Tianshi Lake reopened to the public in 2023, followed by the opening of Shishan Grand Theater in 2024 and the Suzhou Science and Technology Museum in March this year. Together, the venues have expanded the area’s role in the city’s cultural life, offering residents opportunities to visit exhibitions, attend performances and enjoy family activities in one district.

The transformation reflects Suzhou’s effort to make its cultural heritage part of everyday urban life while creating new spaces for contemporary culture. At Shishan, centuries of local history now sit alongside museums, theaters and science facilities, giving the city’s western district a cultural identity rooted in both its past and its future.
